Researcher biography

Léonie has been fascinated with cetaceans since a very young age, but it was not until 2011 that she finally got to study them, plus first came into contact with the field of acoustics, during her Bachelor of Science (BSc) research project. This project was conducted at the Sea Mammal Research Company (SEAMARCO; Goes, the Netherlands) and aimed to establish equal-loudness contours for a harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) for tonal sounds of different frequencies.

After receiving her BSc in Biology from the Radboud University Nijmegen (Nijmegen, the Netherlands), Léonie continued her studies with a Master of Science (MSc) in Marine Biology at the University of Groningen (Groningen, the Netherlands). She participated in two diverse research projects during that time: one focussing on population genetics of North Atlantic sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis), conducted at the University’s Marine Evolution and Conservation laboratory, and the other focussing on social structure and vocal communication of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the southwestern Indian Ocean, conducted at the Groupe Local d’Observation et d’Identification des Cétacées (GLOBICE; La Saline, Réunion).

This second project made her decide to specialize in cetacean acoustics, and after obtaining her MSc she volunteered for and later worked as a research assistant at SEAMARCO. Léonie started her PhD with CEAL in July 2018 and she will be looking at the vocal communication and social structure of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in Moreton Bay.
